The Pale Blue Dot

When working on a description of this site for launch, we came upon a video on YouTube which says a great deal about the philosophy behind MasteryMaze.com.

If you are not familiar with The Pale Blue Dot excerpt written and narrated by the late astronomer Carl Sagan, take a minute to watch the video.

Sagan was a great scientist, but also ventured to do things a different way.  He brought astronomy out of the classroom into the world for all to appreciate and enjoy.  He adapted to the audience and made millions love his field.  His words reflect courage, honesty, and suggest a need for a new perspective.

Education can change the world.   Teachers have a responsibility to send the message and teach today’s students in ways, and with tools that work for them!  What we do really matters, and we need to do it the very best that we can.  We can do it best if we work together!

We welcome a learning partnership between teachers and students!   We are looking forward to doing it a different way; we hope you will join us and be part of creating this learning community!

I love this video!

This video gives me a reality check ever time I watch it. Where do I stand in the big picture? At the same time it shows me the resources available in life. "We are but a speck" offers me resources, energy, possibilities beyond my understanding if I am willing to believe I can and care enough to try. On most days I see this as a message of hope! Not everyone does, I know.

As to the question of collaboration and sharing, I will reserve decision. I see it in many other areas, especially in the internet world. It is truly amazing how the community on the web has rallied together to create options beyond Microsoft and other big controllers. "Open Source" free options are being created everywhere. I honestly don't see that as much in education, and I am not sure why? Is it not a noble cause? Are we afraid?

Where did this video come from?

It looks like it was part of a movie. Does anyone know what movie? Also, is it saying that there is no god? I see blog posts near the clip that say it are saying that. I don't think that is what is meant.

Go Sabres!
